Your friend will tell you that his sketchy landlord withheld his entire security deposit, but he’ll fail to mention that he shattered a window and punched a hole in the wall during a party that got out of control. Or you’ll see a 5-star rave review in which the reviewer seems suspiciously happy with their $200 studio (probably written by the landlord’s best friend).

Finding the best off-campus housing can be as much of a gamble as leaving your roommates home alone with a fridge full of your leftovers—you never know what you’ll find when you walk in the door. Will the place be clean when you move in? Is your landlord a stand-up guy? Will the walls be paper-thin? Questions like these that can give students anxiety when locking in a year-long lease.

Like moths to one of those excruciating bug zappers, it seems like students can’t help but be lured into a lease by the glimmer of a discounted security deposit and some stale doughnuts at the front of a rental office—free food gets us every time.
