For a lot of students, parties are a flagship of the college experience. At the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, no street embodies the college experience as well as Philadelphia Street. It’s not just a hot spot for students looking to live in apartments in Indiana off-campus. On any given night, students at IUP line the sidewalks and pack the bars as they prepare for a night out on the town.
In fact, it’s almost impossible to walk down Philadelphia Street without hearing the bass from a speaker and the chatter of party-goers. It doesn’t matter if it’s a Monday afternoon or a Wednesday night, this street never sleeps and is a hotspot for a number of activities.
First and foremost, Philly Street is a mecca for bar crawls. If your idea of a good time consists of hopping from bar to bar, from midday into the evening hours, Philadelphia Street is the place to be. Just make sure you have on your Saturday night best and a bottle of Gatorade by your bed for the next morning.
First, you’ll want to stop by The Coney for the all your dancing and cheap-drink necessities. The Coney has $1 well drinks from 10 p.m. to midnight, so feel free to guzzle all the gin and tonics, vodka cranberries and whiskey cokes your heart desires. Pace yourself, but remember: specials end at midnight.
You might think your night stops once the rails end, but The Coney isn’t the only place offering insane deals to IUP students. Wolfie’s Pub & Club is notorious for great music and cheap booze. When we say cheap, we mean it—if you play your cards right, you’ll never pay more than $3 for a drink at Wolfie’s. In addition, you and your friends are invited to dance in cages or on top of the bar at any time of the night. In fact, there is a metal ladder located at the end of the bar for your convenience. If you need help getting off the bar, the bartenders are really nice about that, too. Who said chivalry was dead? You’ve probably heard the phrase “nothing good ever happens after 2 a.m.,” but that’s just not true at Wolfie’s! On weekends, the bar is open until 3 a.m., so go ahead and party all night long.
If the bar scene isn’t your cup of tea, Philadelphia Street and the nearby houses have been known to host a house party or two (or ten). In fact, there are several fraternities located on School Street, just one block behind Philadelphia Street. All the jungle juice, sweaty basements, and dirt-cheap beer are practically at your fingertips when you make the trip to Philly Street.
