With just over 5,000 residents, the permanent population of the borough of Shippensburg is smaller than its student body. You might think that going to school in a small town limits your opportunities, but that’s where you’d be wrong! In addition to finding lots of cost-friendly student apartments in Shippensburg PA , you’ll find that Shippensburg provides lots of different opportunities for students, both on and off campus. How, you ask? Read on and find out!
Between its College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Education and Human Services, and the John L. Grove College of Business, there are plenty of different majors to choose from. In addition to undergraduate programs, there are over 50 masters programs, 2 doctoral programs and 3 post-bachelor and post-master’s certificate programs. That’s quite the selection for a total student body of about 8,000!
For a small borough, Shippensburg has a huge amount of history. It all started in 1730 when a dozen Scots-Irish families settled the area, which was once known as part of the “western frontier” of America. Since its inception, Shippensburg has seen the construction of historical cabins, a pre-Revolutionary War military fort, and the university itself, which was built in 1871 and still stands. Many of its buildings have been added to the National Register of Historic Places, including the regal Old Main building.
- There’s Plenty Of Fun To Be Had Off-Campus
Think the only thing to do in college is hang out on the quad and swing the day away in a hammock? Think again. When you’re living the college life, whether it’s on campus or in an awesome apartment in Shippensburg, you’ll find there’s plenty of things to check out in town.
The first place we’d recommend hitting up is the Olde Scotland Yard, where you’ll have tons of fun playing both mini-golf and practicing your pro-golf skills at their driving range. If you don’t love sports, try the H. Ric Luhrs Performing Arts Center, The Glow Zone, or the Shippensburg Historical Society.
- You’re Actually In Two Counties At Once
Shippensburg is unique in that it’s part of two different places at the same time — both Franklin County and Cumberland County! Both have their own unique cultural distinctions and historical attractions, and as part of both counties, you’ll be able to readily explore each in your own time. Their combined population is over 400,000, so if you thought going to Shippensburg University meant you were in a tiny borough in the middle of nowhere, you’d be wrong. We highly suggest taking trips off-campus to visit both places as you get to know your new home for the next four years!
As you can see, Shippensburg is a lot bigger than you might’ve imagined. So what are you waiting for? Find that apartment, check out campus and take your college experience to the next level!
